We are not insurance agents and we are not attempting to sell insurance! You should always consult your insurance agent about your own specific situation and insurance needs!

We always recommend talking to you insurance agent about your specific situation and coverage options. In this post we will discuss some things you can do to prepare for a productive and meaningful conversation with your insurance agent about buying insurance coverage for the items in your storage unit!
Here are 5 easy tips to help you prepare:
- Make a list of your personal items in storage. This may seem like an overwhelming task but it is very important! Not only can it help your insurance agent come up with the right coverage for you, it can also help you in the event that your storage unit is vandalized or a theft occurs! having a detailed list of your stored items can make recovery much easier. Your list should include: Brand names, color, size, serial and/or model numbers, purchase date and any other unique information about your items!
- Keep photographs of items in storage. Along with #1 on this list, keeping photographs of your items is another way to easily document items kept in a storage unit.
- Determine the value of your items. Having accurate values assigned to each of your stored items will ensure that your insurance agent gets enough coverage on your policy to satisfy your requirements. Whenever possible, keep your purchase receipts!
- Ask your agent if you already have coverage for items in your storage unit. It is possible that you may already have some insurance coverage for items in your storage unit as part of your other insurance policies! If you already have some coverage, make sure it is enough!
- Ask your agent what is NOT COVERED. As you probably know, insurance does not cover all losses. Make sure to ask your agent about anything they will not cover. This could include: excluded items, reasons for loss, locations, etc… There is nothing worse than finding out the hard way thinking you “had it covered” when in fact there was no coverage at all!
Insurance can be a tricky thing to get right. However, with a little bit of planning and a meaningful conversation with your insurance agent, you can be prepared to make a decision that best fits your needs!
