Avoid Winter Storage Mistakes: 5 Key Tips

Storing your personal items throughout the winter months can come with unique challenges.  Check out these 5 winter storage tips to help you avoid problems storing your personal items through the Michigan winter!

1.) Storage Containers:  Paper bags and cardboard boxes may work, but they are more susceptible to water damage (holding in moisture). Consider using air-tight plastic containers to better protect your items from environmental changes in moisture and humidity levels.  Clear plastic containers are a great option as they allow you to easily see the contents.

2.)  Covering Items:  Using covers for your items is a great way to add more protection.  Using towels, blankets, and even wool are commonly used.  However, avoid materials like vinyl and plastic wrap – they can trap moisture which is what we are trying to avoid!

3.)  Elevate your items:  Moisture can – and usually does – accumulate on a cold floor.  Unseasonably warm and humid weather can cause concrete slabs to “sweat” by accumulating condensation from the air.  Elevating your items from direct contact with the floor can help by allowing air to circulate all around and under your stored items. Consider using pallets, bricks, or shelves to keep your items from direct contact with the floor.

4.)  Silica and other Desiccants:  Using moisture absorbers can help protect sensitive items from excess humidity and can help protect from mold and/or mildew build up.  Use silica gel packets or other desiccants to help reduce excess moisture in sealed containers – just toss a few inside your storage containers before you seal them up!  There are many different sizes available depending on the size of your space and your storage containers.

5.) Freezing Hazard: Avoid storing items which may be damaged by freezing.  This would include appliances which may have water inside them such as refrigerators, freezers and washing machines!  Pumps, sinks, water heaters, water softeners and other similar items should all be completely emptied of water before being stored over winter.

Using these 5 tips for easier winter storage will help your items make it through the winter undamaged!
