Spring Cleaning tips for SW Michigan!
Spring-cleaning season is upon us in southwest Michigan and Whiskey Run Storage can help you achieve a clutter-free home!!

Cleaning your house, dusting from top to bottom, cleaning under appliances, sorting and organizing every room – the list goes on!
As you sort through your home, attic, basement and garage you may quickly realize that you have more stuff than you imagined! Once you have a nice, clean and organized home, you need a place to keep “everything else”! It can be very helpful to organize these items into separate “piles” and from there you can decide how to deal with each pile.
Here is a list of “piles” to help you get started!
- Trash (is it really trash?)
- Seasonal items
- Items to sell in a garage sale
- Items that need to be kept close to home
- Items that need to be kept at home
- Items that need to be returned to family or friends!
Here are some additional tips:
1. Sort, Organize and Label:
To make cleaning and moving your belongings less overwhelming, it is vital to stay organized during the process! Here are some ideas for staying organized as you work through your spring cleaning:
- Use boxes which can be labeled for like-kind items OR items which will be stored together in the same location.
- If you have space in your garage or driveway – mark out areas on the surface with masking tape to organize large or several items together which will be stored together OR in the same location (ie: at home or in a storage unit)
- Before committing anything to “trash”, create a pile or box for these items so you may review them again before you make a final decision.
Organizing items into piles in this manner will help you visualize the process. If you start your spring cleaning project with a clear plan in mind it will make the whole process much easier!
2. Seasonal Items
Storing seasonal items is a great way to free up space during spring cleaning! Any item that you only use for part of the year can be kept in a storage unit during the off-season – freeing up valuable space in your home or garage!
Here are some seasonal household items that can be stored in the off-season:
- Snowblowers
- Snowmobiles / ATV’s / Jet Skis etc…
- Gardening tools or equipment
- Lawn mowers / trimmers
- Small boats
- Seasonal sporting equipment (bikes, golf clubs, skis, snowboards etc…)
3. Making room for often-used items
Spring cleaning is a great time to make room at home for items you use often – think of things you use weekly, or even daily, that you need to have quick and easy access to at home.
A storage unit can be a great way to make room for these important items at home without having to permanently part with less-used (but still useful and important!) items.
- Make room for your lawn mower – store your snowblower!
- Make room for your fishing boat – store your snowmobile!
- Make room for your seasonal sporting goods – store off-season goods and sports equipment!
- Make room for a new vehicle – store your boat, ATV or ORV!
4. The “Trash” Pile!
Let’s face it – the “trash” pile can be the most difficult pile to deal with! Some things are obviously trash while other things are more difficult to part with!
If you aren’t quite ready to say goodbye forever, consider storing it! At Whiskey Run Storage, you always have the flexibility of a month-to-month lease! That means you can reap the benefit of having a secure place to store your personal items without a long-term commitment!
Having a safe place to store your stuff can prevent you from making a decision you might regret later!
